CRAFT: Growing Transplants for Farm & Market

April 25 @ 3:00 pm - 5:30 pm

Rushton Farm is a 120 member CSA in Chester County, PA, situated on 6 acres in the historic 86 acre Rushton Woods Preserve. The farmers at Rushton grow all their own vegetable, fruit, and flower transplants from seed, including both annual and perennial species. Rushton also performs some asexual propagation with perennial species, in serving not just their production farm, but also their herb garden and food donation plot. Rushton farmers also produce transplants for their annual plant sale, which has become an anchor event for the farm.

This CRAFT event will take place one week prior to Rushton’s annual plant sale, and will put on display Rushton’s propagation operation as it is entering its springtime peak. Rushton farmers will be on hand to discuss their various propagation techniques, from seed to stem, as well the design of their prop facilities and crop plan.
Speaker & Host Information
Rushton Farm began ten years ago, in Willistown, PA. It is a project of the Willistown Conservation Trust, and is a part of the larger Rushton Preserve. In the last ten years, Rushton has grown its CSA membership from 30 members to 130, and its cultivated acreage from just over one to six. The farmers at Rushton are dedicated to sustainable, regenerative agriculture, in not just their horticultural practices but also in their educational work with university students, school groups, and interns.
